Medicines Use Review (MUR) AccreditationMedicines use review (MUR) aims to make the best use of the skills of pharmacists and to provide patients with access to pharmacists’ expertise in order to address their specific medication needs. The Welsh Assembly Government and the Department of Health (DoH) have stipulated that pharmacists must first gain accreditation from a Higher Education Institution (HEI) and have published competencies for the assessment of pharmacists wishing to provide MUR services. The Welsh School of Pharmacy (WSP) and WCPPE at Cardiff University have developed an educational and assessment programme for pharmacists to prepare them for MUR. Overview of AssessmentThe Cardiff University assessment tests both the theory and practice aspects of MUR via submission of a structured portfolio of evidence. The first part of the portfolio has been developed to guide candidates through the process of conducting a MUR to help develop the knowledge and skills required to achieve competency. This includes the design of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for conducting MUR in the workplace; completion of a minimum of two MUR cases (provided); a minimum of one MUR episodes of care (in practice) accompanied by completion of a therapeutic and consultation skills framework for each case; a reflective account of the learning process to illustrate how competency for MUR has been achieved. Following this, candidates should feel well prepared and have a clear understanding of their ‘fitness to practice’ MUR and be ready to complete part 2. This involves completion of two MUR case studies which are provided to candidates in the portfolio. Accreditation Accreditation is awarded upon satisfactory completion of all aspects of the portfolio. Who is eligible? All pharmacists registered by the RPSGB who wish to practice MUR are eligible for registration for the Cardiff University assessment. Cost The fee for registration for the assessment is £70. Cheques made payable to Cardiff University. Following payment, a portfolio will be sent to the candidate who will be notified of forthcoming Exam Board dates. Affiliations This assessment has been developed in collaboration with 5 other Schools of Pharmacy (Universities of Brighton, East Anglia, Hertfordshire, London and Portsmouth).
