Choosing where to undertake your pre-registration pharmacist training is an important decision to make.
Health Education and Improvement Wales commission hospital and multi-sector training posts to meet the requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council to register as a pharmacist.
Hospital pre-registration pharmacist training programme
Hospital training posts in Wales have been established for many years and demonstrate all of the requirements set by the GPhC. They are rotational competency based programmes designed to support you on your journey to registration as a pharmacist.
There are around 40 pre-registration pharmacist places in Wales across six different Health Boards, each providing the opportunity to explore a range of clinical areas and services.
Our experienced and supportive workplace tutors oversee your progress through local and national training and accreditation packages.
Both the hospital and the multi-sector programmes are supported with regional and national off-site training provided by Health Education and Improvement Wales. A copy of the latest training programme can be found here.
The pass rate for hospital and multi-sector programmes in 2018 was 100% (versus a GPhC pass rate of 79%).
Multi-sector pharmacist pre-registration programme
Imagine the benefits of dividing your training year between care settings. The multi-sector programme affords the opportunity to develop as a well-rounded professional who understands the patient experience across health care interfaces, in turn enabling you to work in a range of sectors upon registration.
Five Welsh Health Boards have developed innovative 3-sector pre-registration pharmacist training programmes (through which you will spend time in hospital, community and primary care pharmacy environments). By 2020/21 all Health Boards in Wales will have multi-sector training posts.
The programme will support your development as a pharmacist demonstrating all of the requirements set by the GPhC.
There will be around 20 positions available for 2020/21 across Wales.
Recruitment for these posts is through the National Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacist Recruitment for England and Wales via Health Education England. Information on the recruitment process is available on the National Recruitment page.
There is also an evaluation document available on the first multi-sector available here
