COPD and Asthma – An introduction to the All Wales Management and Prescribing Guidelines
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties, namely emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Although the damage to the lungs caused by COPD is permanent, treatment can help slow down disease progression. An estimated 1.2 million people are living with diagnosed COPD in the UK and research suggests that prevalence is growing.
Asthma is a common lung condition affecting people of all ages with 5.4 million people in the UK currently receiving treatment for the condition. Every 10 seconds someone is having a potentially life-threatening asthma attack in the UK. Asthma can cause occasional breathing difficulties and often starts in childhood (although adults can also develop it for the first time). Despite no current cure for the condition, there are simple treatments that can help keep the symptoms under control.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has guidance in relation to both conditions and The British Thoracic Society (BTS) guidelines for asthma were published in July 2019. In Wales, we now have the All Wales Management and Prescribing Guidelines for both COPD and asthma. Join us on this webinar to find out more, as well as comparing the various guidance available.
After the event, participants will be able to:
- Describe the symptoms of COPD and asthma
- Understand the evidence-based recommendations for the management of COPD and asthma
- Be aware of the current guidance for both conditions
- Identify where to signpost people for further advice and support
All pharmacy professionals, GP’s and practice nurses in patient-facing roles. Other health-care professionals are welcome to attend for information.
