Overview:
 
This session will be discussion based around scenarios to highlight how patients who may be, or who have been, diagnosed with continence problems can be supported. Designed to support pharmacy teams and other healthcare professionals in advancing their knowledge and skills in this area, the session will consider the signs and symptoms of continence problems, the management options as well as the pharmacy team’s role. Incontinence is a common problem thought to affect millions of people. It can be extremely distressing for the individual and families, so join us to see what difference you can make in your professional roles. 

Learning outcomes:

On completion of this learning programme, you should be able to:

  • Describe the main features of the different types of continence problems, including; urinary stress incontinence, urinary urge incontinence, urinary overflow incontinence and bowel incontinence
  • Identify factors that may contribute to the development and/or continuation of these problems
  • Recognise the symptoms and when referral is necessary, or when the condition can be managed appropriately by the patient, with support and advice from the pharmacy team
  • Explore the different pharmacological management options including, dosage regimens, cautions, monitoring requirements and how to manage side effects and non-pharmacological management options that patients could access
  • Understand how enuresis in children can be approached and managed

Pharmacy professionals working in Primary Care and Community settings. Staff working in other sectors are welcome to attend for information.

Format: 

This course will consist of pre-course reading and activities. The session itself will be a facilitated session with active discussion of scenarios with your colleagues.

Pre-course preparation:

A pre-workshop booklet will be made available to you approximately two weeks prior to the event. This will require completion and provide material for discussion and review at the event.
