OVERVIEW:

Effectively supporting patients living with pain can be a real challenge for healthcare professionals. These patients frequently live with pain alongside other long-term health conditions. Knowing what interventions to make in order to achieve improved quality of life is not straightforward, particularly if something has been tried previously and was unsuccessful. This facilitated session, building on information provided in the pre-course resources is an opportunity for teams to get together to discuss various scenarios to help develop knowledge and skills in the management of pain to support patients and their relatives or carers more effectively as part of the wider multidisciplinary team. 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After the event participants will be able to: 

  • Describe the causes of pain and the underlying mechanism of pain
  • Understand the impact persistent pain has on patients and those around them
  • Outline the evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological recommendations for the management of pain
  • Recognise how to use analgesia in managing pain and the risks associated with its use
  • Describe the management of common pain-inducing conditions, including neuropathic pain, back pain and fibromyalgia
  • Know where to signpost patients living with persistent pain
  • Apply a multidisciplinary approach to help support patients in self-managing their pain and to assist them in making informed decisions

A facilitated discussion of pre-provided case studies at a suitable time within your work environment
