Mae osteoporosis yn effeithio ar dros 3 miliwn o bobl yn y DU gyda mwy na 500,000 o bobl yn cael triniaeth ysbyty ar gyfer toriadau esgyrn brau bob blwyddyn. Overview:
Osteoporosis affects over 3 million people in the UK with more than 500,000 people receiving hospital treatment for fragility fractures each year. Losing bone is a normal part of the ageing process but some people are at a greater risk of osteoporosis, in addition, those taking certain medicines.
Differing guidelines in recent years on the management of osteoporosis alongside limited access to DEXA scans in some areas has contributed to a sometimes, confusing picture around managing patients in primary care.
Join us to discuss the overall management of patients with osteoporosis particularly how best overcome the challenges faced.
Learning outcomes:
After attending this event participants will be able to:
- Recognise the key Osteoporosis Guidelines and those most commonly used
- Understand duration of bisphosphonate treatment and where drug holidays are appropriate
- Describe the key counselling advice required for bisphosphonates
- Apply practical tips to review patients where there is no access to a DEXA scan
- Recognise how osteoporosis treatment changes for patients with poor renal function
- Provide key lifestyle interventions and key resources to patients to support their management of osteoporosis
- Understand the place of denosumab and anabolic treatments in osteoporosis management
- Explain the importance of calcium and vitamin d in osteoporosis management and when supplementation is required
- Gain an overview of the use of vitamin d analogues in the management of bone mineral density
