Dermatology Therapeutics Update Day for Pharmacist Independent Prescribers
Patients presenting to community pharmacy seeking advice on skin conditions is very common. This workshop has been specifically developed for community pharmacists with an independent prescribing qualification to increase their confidence in assessing and treating patients appropriately with the following skin conditions:
Acne
Acne, or acne vulgaris, is an inflammatory skin condition that most commonly affects the face, back and chest. It is thought to affect 95% of adolescents in Western industrialised countries. Around 20 to 35% will go on to develop moderate or severe acne.
After the event, participants will be able to:
- Describe the different clinical presentations of acne and diagnostic criteria
- Describe and discuss the topical and systemic treatments for acne
- Generate a management plan tailored to the individual
- Appropriately counsel patients on their treatment including
- Recognise those that require further support and referral
Rosacea
Rosacea is also a chronic, long term inflammatory skin condition predominantly affecting the face. The exact cause is unclear, however, it is thought to involve genetic and environmental risk factors. The management of rosacea includes a range of options including self-management options as well as medical treatment.
After the event, participants will be able to:
- Describe the different clinical presentations of rosacea and diagnostic criteria
- Describe and discuss the topical and systemic treatments for rosacea
- Generate a management plan tailored to the individual
- Appropriately counsel patients on their treatment
- Recognise those that require further support and referral
Eczema
Eczema also known as atopic dermatitis is thought to affect 1 in 5 children and 1 in 10 adults. The management of this condition has widened significantly in recent years with the addition of biologics and JAK inhibitors as treatment options, however topical therapy is the mainstay of treatment and improving patients understanding of this condition will help with long term management.
After the event, participants will be able to:
- Describe the signs & symptoms of eczema together with the diagnostic criteria
- Describe and discuss the topical and systemic treatments for eczema
- Generate a management plan tailored to the individual
- Appropriately counsel patients on their treatment
- Recognise those that require further support and referral
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an immune-medicated chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects 1 in 50 people. It can start at any age with bimodal peaks of onset at 15-25 years and 50-60 years. It tends to persist lifelong, fluctuating in extend and severity.
After the event, participants will be able to:
- Describe the clinical presentations of psoriasis
- Describe and discuss the topical and systemic treatments for psoriasis
- Generate a management plan tailored to the individual
- Appropriately counsel patients on their treatment including
- Recognise those that require further support and referral

Ecsema
Credir bod ecsema a elwir hefyd yn dermatitis atopig yn effeithio ar 1 o bob 5 o blant ac 1 o bob 10 oedolyn. Mae rheoli'r cyflwr hwn wedi ehangu'n sylweddol yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf gan ychwanegu meddyginiaeth fiolegol ac atalyddion JAK fel opsiynau triniaeth, fodd bynnag therapi amserol yw prif stabl triniaeth a bydd gwella dealltwriaeth cleifion o'r cyflwr hwn yn helpu gyda rheolaeth hirdymor.

Soriasis
Mae soriasis yn gyflwr croen llidiol cronig imiwnedd sy'n effeithio ar 1 o bob 50 o bobl. Gall ddechrau ar unrhyw oed gyda pigau deublyg yn 15-25 mlwydd a 50-60 oed. Mae'n tueddu i barhau gydol oes, gan amrywio mewn ymestyn a difrifoldeb.
