DISCUSSION BASED EVENTS – Menopause

Menopause is a natural, biological life stage. Menopause and perimenopause, the menopausal transition, affect people differently, with variable symptoms and duration, which can have a big impact on an individual’s quality of life. This learning programme has been developed to enable you to further develop your knowledge and skills in the management of menopause, in order to support patients more effectively, as part of a wider multidisciplinary team.

This learning programme is suitable for any sector of pharmacy practice. It is aimed at Pharmacy professionals, however it is open for other healthcare professionals to attend. The format is as a discussion based event and will support you to develop your clinical knowledge, advance your medicines optimisation skills and learn with your colleagues to improve team-working skills.

Learning outcomes:

After completing this discussion-based learning programme, you should be able to:

  • Describe the main features of menopause, including symptoms, changes to the body and who is affected
  • Explain the criteria for referral and diagnosis of menopause, including when blood testing may be helpful
  • Identify factors that may contribute to the development of early menopause
  • Explore the different pharmacological management options including, dosage regimens, cautions, monitoring requirements and how to manage side-effects
  • Explore how individuals can be supported and advocated for, including appropriate resources for signposting

Pre-event work:

There is an online course containing all the baseline knowledge that you will require before attending the discussion-based learning session.

It contains some videos for you to watch, exploring some patient perspectives of menopause as well as the role of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) explained by an expert clinician. There is also further clinical information and resources which you may find useful to read through before attending the session.

Once you have completed this pre-event course, you should take some time to reflect on the introductions to the case studies, which are included to help you prepare for the event.

At the event, you will receive Book 2, containing case studies and clinical vignettes to work through. There is a case study centred around primary care and community practice and another that focuses more on secondary care. The vignettes are for everyone to complete. The facilitator will guide you during the session and will adapt the session to the learner needs dependent on their working background.
