The aim of this programme is to examine the evidence-base for primary prevention, thereby ensuring best practice in managing cardiovascular risk.
Learning outcomes
Following completion of this part of the course, you should be able to:
- List the modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease
- Provide advice to patients on lifestyle changes that may reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease
- State the risk factors for developing hypertension
- Recommend first-line treatment for hypertension and alternative regimens if blood pressure targets are not controlled
- Describe the role of lipids in the aetiology of cardiovascular disease
- Evaluate the clinical studies demonstrating the benefit of reducing cholesterol on CHD morbidity and mortality
- Outline the reasons why diabetes increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and how this risk can be minimised
