Overview

This programme will provide you with an overview of breastfeeding, infant formulas and starting solid foods, as well as how to deal with common problems associated with infant feeding. It will provide you with evidenced based information around the advantages of breastfeeding and the safe use of medicines for breastfeeding mothers.

Learning objectives

After completing this programme, you should be able to:

  • Discuss the low uptake of breastfeeding in Wales and the implications of this for Public Health
  • List the advantages of breastfeeding for mother and child
  • Describe the physiology of breastfeeding and appreciate how a mother can get breastfeeding off to a good start
  • Understand the pathophysiology of common infant feeding problems and discuss methods to overcome them
  • Differentiate between the different formula feeds and advise mothers on the appropriate use including signposting where necessary
  • Know when and how to start an infant on solid foods
  • Provide advice on the safe use of medicines for breastfeeding mothers
