Overview
This open learning programme will provide you with the key issues affecting medicines management and older people. Detailed information on the ageing process and links to the NSF for Older People and Medicines and older people are provided.
Learning objectives
On completion of all aspects of this programme you should be able to:
- Describe the challenge of the ageing process: anatomical, physiological, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamic and psychosocial changes, the effects on drug handling, prescribing and daily living
- List prevalent diseases and problems with prescribing medication in ageing; common reasons for admission to hospital or care homes
- Explain the differing levels of medication review with pharmaceutical care and concordance and their place in the management of medicines for older people and their carers
- Discuss the NSF for Older People and Medicines and older people: their purpose, key themes and their place in pharmacy practice
