Overview

This open learning programme introduces a broad range of sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), their diagnosis and management, and focuses on how pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can help their clients who are at risk, or who have suspected or proven infections. Its aim is to encourage a professional and non-judgmental approach to supporting this client group and to help you prepare new service proposals in collaboration with colleagues in other disciplines.

Learning objectives

On completion of all aspects of this programme you should be able to:

  • Recognise and overcome some of the difficulties in attitudes to sexual health and sexually-transmitted infections among pharmacy staff
  • Explain to clients how they can prevent sexually transmitted infections
  • Explain how pharmacies can contribute to the Government’s sexual health action plan
  • Cascade training in sexually-transmitted infections and their diagnosis and management in community pharmacy to your own staff
  • Apply your knowledge to take a leading role in public health campaigns in sexual health
  • Understand the treatment of the commonest sexually transmitted infections
  • Describe the presentation, diagnosis and treatment of the commonest sexually-transmitted infections
  • Signpost clients to sexual health services in the locality
