Overview:
Clostridioides difficile (known also as C. difficile or C. diff) is a bacteria that can infect the bowel and cause severe diarrhoea and colitis.
It most commonly affects people who have previously been treated with antibiotics and it can spread easily to others. C. difficile infection can present with mild symptoms but can lead to a more severe disease of the intestines, and in some cases can become life threatening. Confirmed C. difficile infection, usually, requires treatment with a course of antibiotics.
The antimicrobial prescribing strategy for managing Clostridioides difficile infection in community and hospital settings is outlined in the NICE guidance. The aim is to optimise antibiotic use and reduce antibiotic resistance and C. difficile infection recurrence rates.
